Guest Speakers: Jinga Desai and Kari Smalkoski
Minnesota Youth Story Squad (MYSS) nurtures and amplifies the voices of Minnesota youth by helping them tell stories and make media that can cross generational, cultural, and social audiences. This program inspires, empowers, engages, and instills confidence in youth by emphasizing and deepening their knowledge about society and public engagement while developing their skills to advocate for change in their schools and cities. It also helps them imagine educational and career pathways.
Professor Jigna Desai and researcher Kari Smalkoski, from the Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota, lead the MYSS team. The team partners with students at urban public schools in Minneapolis to empower youth and impact educational policy as they explore issues of race, gender and sexual orientation. In their presentation, Desai and Smalkoski will discuss issues teenage girls and college age women in their program are experiencing and the ways mentorship between them has been impactful.
