Tuesday Program - A Matter of Facts: Real People/False Convictions

Event Date: Tuesday, August 14, 2018
Event Time: 11:00 am

Guest Speaker: Joan Treppa

Joan Treppa will share her knowledge of how easily someone can be convicted of a crime they did not commit. Her experience comes from being in the forefront of finding legal assistance for six innocent Wisconsin men in prison for murder—a crime she’s certain they did not commit. Wrongful conviction is a topic largely overlooked as a significant problem in our society but one slowly gaining attention because of the growing number of exonerations of innocent people who’ve served an average of twenty years in prison for crimes they did not commit. The program will educate and highlight the flaws of our “best system in the world” to prevent others from becoming victims of a wrongful conviction.

Joan is a wife, mother, social justice advocate for the wrongfully convicted, and award winning Minnesota author of “Reclaiming Lives: Pursuing Justice for Six Innocent Men.”
She champions for the release of six Wisconsin men unfairly and unlawfully convicted of murder in 1995. Using her own tragedies as her inspiration, she has become an example of the urgent need and personal benefits gained through helping others.
