Much has been written over the last few years about the alleged decline of US economic leadership in the world. Most of this commentary is geopolitical wishful thinking unsupported by verifiable economic data. We will discuss:

• The systemic reasons behind the dollar’s position as the world’s top reserve currency, and why that is unlikely to change substantially within our lifetimes.

• Why certain countries would prefer to conduct their trade with the world using other forms of currency or even “stateless” forms of value, like crypto.

• Why a strong dollar spells trouble for governments with weak or unstable national currencies, but whose external obligations (loans coming due, bonds maturing) are mainly dollar-denominated.
