The Impact of Title IX on Women’s Sports: A Love-Story Presented by Mary Jo Kane


After decades of being told that girls and women weren’t interested in playing sports—and wouldn’t be any good even if they tried—the federal law known as Title IX exploded that myth. Passed in 1972 to prohibit gender discrimination within educational settings, Title IX had its greatest impact on women’s sports. From unprecedented growth to remarkable achievements—Caitlin Clark, anyone?—this civil rights legislation forever changed what it means to be both female and an athlete.


Professor Kane will outline how Title IX came to be so closely identified with women’s sports. She will also highlight how far we’ve come from pre-Title IX days when young girls and women were denied opportunities.
